Last updated: July 2026 — every price on this page was checked against the named UK sources on 8 July 2026.
A clutch replacement costs £400–£670 on average in the UK — £670.82 on the FixMyCar marketplace, £400 on ClickMechanic, around £670 per the RAC and £454.55 on Bumper (2026 prices).
The number that really decides your bill: whether the dual-mass flywheel goes too — clutch plus DMF averages £1,082.95 (FixMyCar).
Clutch replacement cost: all five sources compared
| Source | Published figure |
|---|---|
| FixMyCar (marketplace average) | £670.82 — clutch + DMF £1,082.95 |
| ClickMechanic (average, range) | £400 (£250–£600) |
| RAC (average, range) | ~£670 (£500–£1,000) |
| Bumper (UK average) | £454.55 (£300–£700, some over £1,200) |
| Checkatrade (kit + labour averages) | kit £325 + labour £450 |
By make, the two big datasets agree closely: Ford clutch jobs average £632 and Vauxhall £722 on the RAC’s table — figures that match FixMyCar’s almost exactly (£631.93 / £722.24), so treat them as one underlying dataset rather than two independent confirmations. ClickMechanic’s own estimates run lower: Ford £566, Vauxhall £690.
Parts vs labour: where the money goes
Checkatrade’s breakdown: the clutch kit averages £325 (£150–£500), labour averages £450 (£150–£750), plus £20–£100 in fluids and small parts. Time on the job: around 4 hours average on ClickMechanic (range 3 to over 7.5), three to five per Checkatrade, 4–6 per Bumper and 5–8 per the RAC — the gearbox has to come off, which is also why anything else behind it (flywheel, slave cylinder, rear main seal) is cheapest done at the same time.
The dual-mass flywheel: the fork in every clutch quote
Most modern manuals carry a dual-mass flywheel that wears with the clutch. Replace both and the UK average jumps to £1,082.95 (FixMyCar) — roughly £400 of parts on top plus shared labour. A garage cannot always know the flywheel’s state until the box is off, so agree both prices up front: the clutch-only figure and the with-DMF figure. A repair rather than replacement is sometimes viable too — FixMyCar’s average clutch repair is £531.45 and the RAC’s repair band is £450–£650.
What affects the price?
- Flywheel condition — the difference between £400–£670 and £1,083 on average.
- Car size and drivetrain — diesel and larger cars carry dearer kits and more hours.
- What the quote includes — slave cylinder, fluids and small parts (£20–£100) vary between quotes.
- Independent vs dealer — £200+ premium at franchises across our model guides.
- Location — £50–£100 hourly in cities against £35–£50 in smaller towns (ClickMechanic).
Frequently asked questions
How long does a clutch replacement take?
Around 4 hours on average (ClickMechanic), with published bands of 3–8 hours across sources — plan on losing the car for the day.
What are the signs the clutch is going?
A high or vague biting point, slipping under hard acceleration, difficulty engaging gears and a burning smell. Acting early protects the flywheel — the expensive half of the job.
Do I have to replace the flywheel too?
Only if it is worn — but on cars past 80,000 miles it often is. Since the labour is shared, replacing a marginal DMF during the clutch job beats paying for the same strip-down twice later.
Why does the same job get quoted £450 and £900?
Kit brand, flywheel included or not, slave cylinder included or not, and the garage’s hourly rate. Ask for itemised quotes — the bare totals are not comparable.
